    Technical advisor (dairy farming & breeding)
    The European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps (EVHAC) is an initiative developed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) of the European Commission. Volunteers working under the EVHAC project will be placed directly with VSO”s partner organisations in Bangladesh or South Sudan, and will be supported by VSO offices in each of those countries.
    VSO is the world”s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO”s high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. VSO has around 1,500 volunteers working with partners in 36 countries.
    Technical advisor (dairy farming & breeding)

    Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
    Start date: 27th September 2012
    Length: 3 months
    BRAC is the largest NGO in the world, working with the poor, especially women and girls, to understand their needs to increase their access to resources, support their entrepreneurship and empower them to become agents of change.
    What does the role involve?
    You will work with BRAC to develop their dairy programmes. To do this you will:
    • Conduct a study on existing cross breeding performance in NW Bangladesh.
    • Collect information on existing practices/knowledge/ideas of dairy farmers on breeding issues.
    • Validate the findings and link those to existing breeding policies
    • Write the final study report
    • Develop and support the implementation of a new breeding programme strategy for milk collection.
    • Prepare a budget and plan for the establishment of an embryo transfer laboratory for dairy breeding of cattle & buffalo.
    Skills, qualifications and experience required
    You will have a degree in dairy science, breeding or animal nutrition, and significant experience in a dairy business environment. You will have good knowledge of dairy cattle breeding including embryo transfer technology and progeny testing, food science, milk processing and marketing. Ideally you will have a good understanding of the opportunities and challenges of building a profitable and sustainable businesses in a developing country that will benefit the rural poor. You will be flexible enough to work with marginalized people in a changing, resource-poor environment, able to motivate others and work in a participatory, inclusive style.

    We’ll ask you to commit 3 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness raising and fundraising.
