Higher education development and management advisor
The European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps (EVHAC) is an initiative developed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) of the European Commission. Volunteers working under the EVHAC project will be placed directly with VSO”s partner organisations in Bangladesh or South Sudan, and will be supported by VSO offices in each of those countries.
VSO is the world”s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO”s high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. VSO has around 1,500 volunteers working with partners in 36 countries.
Higher education development and management advisor
Employer: Institute for Professional and Civic Studies (IPCS)
Location: Yei County, South Sudan
Start date: August or November 2012
Length: 6 months
What does the role involve?
You will work with Institute staff and the Executive Director to:
• Develop a strategic plan for the college
• Review and develop a curriculum for Diplomas and Certificates on various subjects including:
– Governance and Development
– Human Rights and Democracy
– Organizational Development
– Public Administration
– Finance and Accounting
– Business administration
– Languages (English, Arabic, French and Kiswahili)
– IT
• Develop organisational and staff policies and procedures
• Train the teaching staff on teaching methodologies, code of conduct etc.
• Develop an implementation plan for research proposals, an advocacy strategy and policies
• Build relevant network and partnership relationships to increase learning between organisations and individuals.
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You will have a degree in a relevant subject (e.g. higher education, social science, business management). You will have significant work experience in higher education project management (including curriculum development, policy and procedure development and staff training). You will be mature, sensitive to the needs of others and able to build good working relations with local staff. You will have good communication, facilitation and networking skills, be a self-starter and open to learning.
And the rest…
You will be based in a small state town in Yei County, where there are other VSO volunteers. You will need to travel for work including to some of the college”s field co-ordination offices. We”ll ask you to commit 6 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we”ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we”ll help you resettle and we”ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness raising and fundraising.
