Rund zwei Kilometer n\u00f6rdlich vom kleinen Ort Bushmills direkt an der K\u00fcste. Von Belfast aus f\u00e4hrt man die rund 80 km auf der M2 \u00fcber Antrim nach Ballymena, dann auf der A26 nach Ballymoney und schlie\u00dflich auf der B62 und B17 bis zum Giant&#8217;s Causeway Parkplatz. Die sch\u00f6nere Strecke ist allerdings die Fahrt an der K\u00fcste entlang auf der Coaseway Coast Route. Du findest sie im oben verlinkten Artikel.<\/p>\n<p>Im Giant&#8217;s Causeway Visitor Centre gibt es Tickets sowie einen Zubringerbus mit Rollstuhllift f\u00fcr den 1,5 km langen Weg bis zum Naturdenkmal. Er besteht aus etwa 40.000 Basalts\u00e4ulen, die rund 60 Mio. Jahre als sind. Rund die H\u00e4lfte der S\u00e4ulen haben einen sechseckigen Querschnitt. Es gibt aber auch welche mit weniger oder mehr Ecken. Sie ragen f\u00f6rmlich aus dem Ozean heraus und die l\u00e4ngsten davon messen stattliche zw\u00f6lf Meter.<\/p>\n<p>Die Gesteinsschicht ist bis zu 25 Meter dick. Der &#8222;Damm des Riesen&#8220; verl\u00e4uft knapp f\u00fcnf Kilometer an den Klippen entlang und endet im Meer. Nach einer alten Legende taucht er an der schottischen K\u00fcste als Fingal&#8217;s Cave wieder auf. Das ist eine H\u00f6hle auf der schottischen Insel Staffa, die ebenfalls von Basalts\u00e4ulen umgeben ist. Die Basalts\u00e4ulen sollen durch die sehr langsame Abk\u00fchlung von Lava entstanden sein. Dabei muss die Abk\u00fchlung sehr langsam und auch gleichm\u00e4\u00dfig verlaufen sein. Bei diesem Prozess bilden sich Spannungsrisse, die sich senkrecht zur Fl\u00e4che ausbilden. Der Vulkan wurde durch Erosion abgetragen.<\/p>\n<p>Die senkrecht aufragenden S\u00e4ulen geh\u00f6ren zu den erstaunlichsten Naturerscheinungen Europas. Fast unwirklich erscheint diese fremdartige H\u00fcgellandschaft aus hexagonalen Steinen. Definitiv bildet die Steinformation aus dem Vulkanzeitalter eine ganz besondere Landschaft. Sie besagt, dass der Riese Finn McCool &#8211; auch bekannt als Fionn MacCumhaill &#8211; von seinem schottischen Widersacher Benandonner \u00fcbel beleidigt wurde. Fionn entschloss sich, einen Damm zu bauen, um Benandonner zu besiegen. Dieser nahm die Herausforderung an und kam \u00fcber diesen Felsdamm nach Irland.<\/p>\n<p>Vom Bau des Dammes war Fionn allerdings so ersch\u00f6pft, dass er sich das Duell nicht mehr zutraute. Er verkleidete sich daraufhin als Baby und sagte seinem Widersacher, dass Fionn bald zur\u00fcckkommen m\u00fcsse. Bei der Gr\u00f6\u00dfe des angeblichen Babies erblasste Benandonner und stellte sich die gigantischen Ausma\u00dfe des Vaters vor. Dabei geriet er in Panik, rannte \u00fcber den Damm zur\u00fcck nach Schottland und zerst\u00f6rte ihn dabei hinter sich. Besonders sch\u00f6n fand ich die Basalts\u00e4ulen am Nachmittag und fr\u00fchen Abend. Eine tolle Stimmung mit dem warmen Licht der langsam untergehenden Sonne. Allerdings hat man den Giant\u2019s Causeway nicht f\u00fcr sich alleine. Die Touristenattraktion ist sehr beliebt und demenstprechend schwierig ist es, wenn man Fotos ohne Personen machen m\u00f6chte. Hier f\u00fchrt auch der Fernwanderweg <a href=\"https:\/\/walkni.com\/ulsterway\/\">Ulster Way<\/a> entlang. Er f\u00fchrt rund 1.000 km an der K\u00fcste entlang. F\u00fcr eine kurze Wanderung bietet sich Shepherd&#8217;s Steps bzw. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/giants-causeway\/trails\/giants-causeway-red-trail\">Red Trail<\/a> an.
